State of Ohio Motorcycle Program

The State of Ohio Motorcycle Program is an open enrollment program; participants do not have to be in law enforcement to participate. The Basic Rider Course is of great value to beginners and experienced riders alike in that it allows students to learn about reducing the risk of riding a motorcycle and to practice in a controlled environment under the watchful eye of trained instructors. Courses are conducted at Tri-C's Western and Eastern campuses. Classes start promptly at 6 p.m. If the participant is not in the classroom at that time they forfeit their seat and there is NO refund.

Participants must provide proof of Motorcycle Endorsement on their driver’s license or a valid temporary motorcycle permit on the first day of class.

Basic Rider Course (BRC):

  • 16 hour beginner motorcycle rider training course designed to reduce accident involvement and is related to reducing injuries in the event of an accident. Motorcycles are provided.

Basic Rider Course for Returning Rider (BRC-RR):

  • 9 hour course designed for those over 18 years of age who have been riding with a temporary permit for longer than one year (over 1,000 miles of experience) and for experienced riders returning to riding, with or without a motorcycle endorsement, after several years of not riding.

Experienced Rider Course:

  • 6 hours of training on your motorcycle in a parking lot under the watchful and helpful eye of a trained instructor

You will be riding a motorcycle; therefore, during the riding portions of the course, you must wear protective clothing consisting of the following:

  • Over-the-ankle sturdy footwear Full-finger gloves
  • Long-sleeved shirt or jacket
  • Long pants without holes -- preferably jeans
  • DOT-approved helmet if you have one -- limited number of helmets available to borrow
  • Eye protection if using an open-faced helmet or a full-face helmet with the face shield down

The following is required to pass the BRC and/or the BRC-RR courses:

  • 100% attendance in both classroom and riding sessions
  • 96% or better on a written knowledge test (multiple choice, 50 questions - all questions are covered in the student workbook or the classroom movies)
  • 20 or fewer points deducted on the Riding Skill Evaluation at the end of the course. You will be evaluated on the riding skills you have been practicing during the course and are necessary to reduce the risk of riding a motorcycle. The Riding Skill Evaluation is similar to the On-Cycle Endorsement Test given by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
  • No errant behavior -- this is a safety course

Please visit the Motorcycle Ohio website for more information or to register for a class.
