What is the application process?
All new international students must complete the International Student Application and submit all required documents listed on the checklist. Applications cannot be submitted online.

How long before I hear from Tri-C after applying?
Once your application is received, you will receive an email confirmation within a few business days. If your application is complete, an admission decision is typically made within two to three weeks.
What makes my documents “official?”
Official documents must:
- Be issued directly by the authorizing institution (bank, school, testing agency)
- Include a stamp, seal or be printed on official letterhead
- Be certified if stamped/signed by an authorized official (e.g., notary). Photocopies or scans without official certification are not accepted.
Can I email my application or bank documents?
Yes, you may email your application forms and academic documents.
However, bank documents must be original (on bank letterhead) and submitted by mail or in person. Scanned or emailed bank statements are not accepted.
How can I check the status of my application?
Email the International Student Services coordinator at the campus where you applied. Contact information is listed on the International Students page.
What financial documents do I need to submit?
You must submit:
- A Financial Support Form completed by you and all sponsors.
- A copy of the financial sponsor’s passport photo ID or driver’s license.
- An official bank statement or letter (on bank letterhead) for each sponsor.
Requirements:
- Minimum available funds: $29,539 in liquid assets
- Statement must be less than six months old from the semester start date
- Must be in English or accompanied by an official translation
- Must be the account of an individual(s), no company/business bank statements accepted
- Bank statements in any currency are accepted, but scanned or emailed bank documents are not accepted
Do I need to take the TOEFL, IELTS or SAT test?
Yes, as proof of English proficiency is required. Submit one of the following to receive an academic I-20:
- TOEFL iBT: 4 (speaking can be a 3.5)
- IELTS Academic: 6.0
- ACT Reading: 18
- SAT Reading: 480
- Tri-C In-Person ESL Exam
- Tri-C Placement Test: Placement into ENG-1010
- Transfer Credit: College-level English with grade “C” or better from an accredited U.S. institution
- Scores are valid for two years. SAT/ACT are valid for five years.

What is the minimum score for admission?
For ESL placement consideration:
- TOEFL: 2 (no sub-score below 1.5)
- IELTS: 4.0
Will Tri-C accept my foreign college credits?
Yes, if evaluated by a member agency of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (Members – NACES).

Do I need to declare a major?
Yes, you must select a major on your application. You may change it later.
Can I study only English as a Second Language (ESL)?
Tri-C is not a language institute. Students must apply for a degree program but may start with ESL courses based on placement.
How much does it cost to study at Tri-C?
Estimated tuition and fees: $7,349 per academic year
However, you must show $29,539 in financial documentation to meet visa requirements.
Is financial aid (FAFSA) available to F-1 visa holders?
No. F-1 students are not eligible for federal or state financial aid.
Are scholarships available?
Yes, but only privately funded scholarships. F-1 students cannot receive scholarships funded by federal, state or local sources.

How many credits do I have to take?
- F-1 students must enroll in at least 12 credit hours per semester.
- At least 9 credits must be in person.
- If you take only 12 credit hours, only one online course (3 credits) would be allowed per semester.
Can I take classes at different campuses?
Yes, you may take courses at any Tri-C location.
Can I work while I'm in the U.S.?
F-1 students may work on campus only, up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session.
Off-campus work requires prior authorization (CPT, OPT, etc.).
When is tuition due?
Tuition is due at the time of registration. Failure to pay may result in your classes being dropped.
What are the application deadlines?
Application deadlines vary by semester. Visit International Student Application Deadlines for current dates.
How do I get a student visa?
After you are accepted and receive your Form I-20, you must apply for an F-1 student visa at the U.S. embassy or consulate in your home country.
Bring:
- College acceptance letter
- Form I-20
- Passport
- Proof of SEVIS fee payment
- Financial documentation
Requirements vary by country. Check your local U.S. embassy or consulate for specific instructions before your appointment.
How do I apply for a change of status?
Submit all required items listed on the Change of Status Checklist to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Processing can take four to six months.
If you hold a B-1/B-2 tourist visa, you cannot begin classes until your case is approved.

What is the weather like in Cleveland?
