Immigration Updates

We know you may have questions about the new F-1 immigration rules.

The International Student Services team is reviewing the new rules carefully and can help you understand what they mean for you.

What Is Changing?

Starting Sept. 15, 2026, new students who enter the United States with an F-1 visa and their F-2 dependents will receive an Admit Until Date (AUD) on their I-94 instead of Duration of Status (D/S).

Main Changes

Admission Date

  • Students who enter the U.S. or change to F-1 status on or after Sept. 15, 2026, will receive an AUD on their I-94.
  • This date will be 30 days after your I-20 program end date.
  • The grace period after you finish your program will change from 60 days to 30 days.

If You Need More Time

  • If you need to stay past your AUD, you must apply before your I-94 expires.
    • You may need to apply if you are:
    • Extending your program
    • Transferring to another school
    • Changing from ESL to an academic program
    • Applying for post-completion practical training
  • You must file Form I-539 with USCIS.
  • The application may require fees, fingerprinting (biometrics) and an interview.

Current Students

  • If you are already in the U.S. and your I-94 says D/S, your status will not change immediately.
  • If you travel outside the U.S. and return on or after September 15, 2026, you will receive a new I-94 with an AUD.
  • If you plan to continue your studies after your I-20 or OPT ends, you may need to apply for an extension of stay.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Students

  • ESL students can stay in that program for up to 24 months.
  • If you finish ESL and want to begin an academic program, you must file Form I-539.  You may start your new program while waiting for program extension approval.
  • The application includes fees, biometrics and possibly an interview.

Changing Your Major or Transferring Schools

  • During their first academic year, new F-1 students cannot change their major or educational goal or transfer to another school. Choose your major carefully before you begin.

Earning Another Degree

After completing a degree under the new rule, students cannot begin another program at the same or a lower degree level.

What Should You Do Now?

Most students do not need to do anything right now.

If your I-20 expires in December 2026, please contact your International Student Advisor as soon as possible. You may qualify for a program extension before September 15.

These rules may affect students differently. We are still reviewing them and will share updates.

We will provide:

  • More information
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Advising appointments and workshops

Please contact our office if you:

  • Plan to travel outside the U.S.
  • Want to transfer to another school
  • Need to extend your program
  • Have questions about your immigration status

Our team is here to help you maintain your F-1 status and complete your studies.

Thank you for being part of the Tri-C international student community.
