If you are not already an active Tri-C student, you must first apply to the college.

Submission of a Health Career Program Application is not required for this program.  A student pursuing the Medical Billing Specialist Certificate must be eligible to enter into English 1010 and Math 1000-level. A Tri-C Academic Counselor can approve registration into the Medical Billing Specialist course sequence once these eligibility requirements have been met. Consult with an Academic Counselor to determine if these required placement levels have been met or if additional coursework is necessary.

Upon completion of all courses in the Medical Billing Specialist program sequence, a student should complete a Petition for Degree/Certificate form and submit it to the Tri-C Enrollment Center.

The Medical Billing Specialist Certificate is a short-term program established to prepare students for employment in physicians' offices, medical insurance companies and outpatient billing services.

Medical Billing Specialists provide patient billing services for physicians, dentists, physical therapists and other healthcare providers.

Medical Billing Specialists knowledge includes:

  • ICD-10-CM, CPT-4 and HCPCS coding
  • Medical terminology
  • Processing insurance claims
  • Appeals and denials
  • Fraud and abuse
  • HIPAA and OIG Compliance
  • Information and web technology
