Tri-C Expands Medina County Partnerships to Support Learners
College partners with Buckeye High School; Brunswick University Center executive chosen for Leadership Medina Signature Class
For Northeast Ohio to thrive, access to high-quality, affordable higher education must extend into every corner of the region.
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) is expanding its partnerships in Medina County to address key regional priorities and directly contribute to the long-term economic vitality of Northeast Ohio.
Historically, Medina County high school students did not have a two-year higher education option, a barrier that could leave capable students behind at a crucial point in their academic lives. To address this challenge, the College opened the Brunswick University Center in 2011 to expand higher education services and resources in the county.
Now, Tri-C has partnered with Buckeye Local Schools to launch the Associate's Academy and College Credit Plus lab at Buckeye High School. Unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the newly transformed facility gives high school sophomores a dedicated, college-style environment to complete a recommended blueprint of classes.
"We are planting seeds of hope through this academy," said Tri-C President Michael A. Baston, J.D., Ed.D. "We are saying to those students who raised their hands and said, ‘I want to try, and I want to start,' that we see you, we support you and we will encourage you."
The first cohort includes 27 students who will earn both their high school diploma and a Tri-C associate degree upon graduation. The program combines Tri-C curricula with instruction from on-site high school faculty and remote support.
The College is also advancing partnerships through the Leadership Medina Signature Class of 2027. Cameron Redden, Ed.D., the chief administrative officer of the Brunswick University Center, was selected for this year's class, which kicks off Aug. 27.
Redden will join other leaders from the nonprofit, corporate, education and government sectors across the region for a nine-month experience.
The program gives established local leaders the skills, knowledge and network needed to address the unique challenges facing Medina County and surrounding areas. Participants will engage in a series of workshops, experiential learning opportunities and community projects that will deepen their understanding of local issues and enhance their leadership capabilities.
