How Deby Lexow Built LOCLE Box After Corporate Life

Graphic with image of Deby LexowDeby Lexow's entrepreneurial journey began where many others end — after nearly three decades in corporate roles. Instead of embracing retirement like her peers, she launched LOCLE Box (pronounced Local Box), a gifting service dedicated to strengthening local commerce and championing Ohio artisans known for exceptional quality.

A decade later — and a graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses (10KSB) program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) in Spring 2024 — Lexow's vision has evolved from startup dreams to strategic exit planning.

LOCLE Box, based in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, sends customized gift baskets featuring homemade products directly to customers' doorsteps.

"We customize gift baskets while promoting small-batch Ohio artisans focusing on homemade products, write a handwritten note and ship to their doorstep. Easy and local!" Lexow said.

The 10KSB program proved transformative for both Lexow and her business.

"Participating in the 10KSB program was a game-changer for my gifting service business," she said. "It provided knowledge and resources, from strategic planning to financial management, which helped me develop my approach to my business operations."

The program's comprehensive approach addressed every aspect of her business with immediate practical applications. Lexow is now adopting new online sales channels and implementing automated customer service tools for clients purchasing repeat gifts. These efficiencies are supporting ambitious growth plans: adding three part-time employees and doubling revenue within five years.

Perhaps most valuable were the networking opportunities.

"I connected with suppliers and other business owners, leading to collaborations and peer support that have been instrumental in navigating challenges and seizing growth opportunities," Lexow said.

Lexow's path to the program spanned six years, delayed by leadership roles with NAWBO and the Chagrin Valley Chamber of Commerce. Now, with enhanced tools and confidence, she's beginning her exit strategy to eventually sell LOCLE Box and retire — for the second time.
