Fall 2023 Commencement: John Loas Fulfills a Lifelong Dream at 78

Strongsville resident first enrolled at Tri-C in 1963 when College opened

Graphic of John LoasAt age 78, John Loas is celebrating a significant achievement — graduating from Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®).

An unwavering passion drove Loas to realize his lifetime goal of earning a college degree, no matter how long it took. The now-retired Strongsville resident first arrived at Tri-C when the College opened its doors in 1963.

"I was there on the first day of classes," Loas said. "My educational journey was interrupted when I served in the Army before working and raising a family. I have wanted to earn a college degree my entire life, and I was determined to achieve that."

Loas will graduate with an Associate of Arts during the College’s Fall Commencement on Dec. 14 at the Wolstein Center.

Tell us about yourself.
I think what makes me most unique is my determination to go above and beyond in everything that I do. Since retiring 18 years ago, I have focused my energy on helping veterans through fundraising activities. We have raised over $33,000 to help end veteran homelessness.

Why did you choose Tri-C?
I chose Tri-C because of its reputation and the fact that it has a campus close to my home.

Describe your Tri-C experience.
Tri-C offered support whenever I needed it. Despite my age, the professors and teaching staff were more than happy to answer any questions I had. I would not have received my degree without their support.

How has Tri-C changed your life?
It was very challenging to get my degree at my age, but well worth all the hard work it took. I am very proud that I succeeded.

Do you have any pearls of wisdom to share with students considering a similar degree or certificate program?
Work closely with your counselor throughout their educational journey. Most importantly, when the challenges become difficult, never give up on your dream.

Cuyahoga Community College will celebrate the academic achievements of its newest graduates during Commencement on Dec. 14 at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland. Check our News and Events page leading up to the event for more highlights from the Class of 2023.
