Do You Need to Take the English Placement Test?

Students may be waived from taking the English Department's placement test for a variety of reasons.  Please refer to the chart below for specific placements.

  • An earned associate degree, bachelor’s degree or higher
  • A grade of “C” or better in college-level English from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Successful (“C” or better) completion of developmental English within the last two years at another Ohio community college or university
  • English placement scores within the last two years from Tri-C
  • Satisfactory Standardized Test Scores.  Log in to your act.org (ACT) or collegeboard.org (SAT) account to send your test scores or submit your unofficial test scores to admissions@tri-c.edu.
  • Satisfactory High School Grade Point Average (GPA) within the last 2 years

If none of the above applies, you must take The English Placement Test

The placement test is a writing assessment. You will receive an essay prompt sent to your email and  spend up to two hours composing an essay in response to the prompt. You will return your essay and the composition will be read and scored by an English faculty member who will assign you a course placement.

Step 1 - Complete English test prep

Log in to my Tri-C space. Choose the New Student (Student) tab. Under the Placement Testing section, select English Test Prep. Complete the short module to help you prepare for placement.

Step 2 - Schedule an appointment for testing

Log in to my Tri-C space.  In the New Student (Student) tab, under Placement Testing, select English Placement Test Appointment Form. Complete the form by answering all questions. Choose an appointment time to complete your essay assignment. Instructions will be sent to your email on the date and time you choose.

Step 3 - Complete the English Department's placement test

At your appointment time, the Testing Center will send you an email with instructions to complete your writing assignment You will have two hours to complete the essay assignment. If you do not finish and return your essay in two hours, you will be given a new assignment to complete.

As you compose your essay for submission, please remember that the work you submit must be written by you during the time allotted. Do not engage in research on websites or in books or other resources. Do not take information from somewhere else. Use only your own thinking about the topic in the paragraphs that you write. 

Using the words and ideas of others without proper attribution is called plagiarism. Using outside sources for this essay in any manner would be considered academic dishonesty. Student essays may be checked for plagiarism by a plagiarism-detection program. Should your work be plagiarized, it will not be scored.
