Information about SURT-1000, Survey of Surgical Technology:

SURT-1000 is our program’s introductory course designed to help students make an informed decision about the profession of surgical technology before enrolling in the program. This is our “surgical boot camp” course to see what you think of the profession, our program, give your an overview of topics you will be learning, teach you some basic instruments and hand skills and to see if this would be a good fit - all BEFORE you spend any more time and energy pursuing a field that may not interest you after all.

We offer SURT-1000 three times a year. Two sessions are held in the spring semester and one in the summer semester. This course is a “Blended Learning” course - half of the time will be spent in a traditional classroom setting, and the other half will be spent online using Brightspace. Weeks 1, 4, 6 and 8 will be held on campus. Additional information regarding the course will be emailed to registered students the week before class begins.

HTEC-1060, Medical Terminology I is a prerequisite for this course. It must be completed BEFORE taking this course. It cannot be taken concurrently with this course. NO EXCEPTIONS!

SURT-1000 may only be taken twice. After two attempts and the student has not been successful with a grade of a “B” or better, a discussion with the program director is needed to determine possible remedial plans if the student still wants to pursue the Surgical Technology Program.

Spring Semester:

Session A - Fridays from 3-5:30 p.m.
Session B - Fridays from 3-5:30 p.m.

You will also need a departmental override to register for SURT-1000 for the spring semester courses. Contact Beth Stokes at beth.stokes@tri-c.edu. Please include your Tri-C S-number in your email, and which session of SURT-1000 you would like - A or B. (Students who have completed BIO-2331 will have priority in Session A.) Please state that in your email if that applies to your situation.

Please remember, HTEC-1060 (Med Term I) is a prerequisite for this course. It must be completed BEFORE taking this course. It cannot be taken concurrently with this course. NO EXCEPTIONS!

You will be notified by email when your registration override has been completed. Please be aware that a limited number of overrides will be given out at one time, and students who have been given one do have a timed response in which to register. Please be patient when emailing, as the numerous requests for this class are processed in the order in which they are received.
