What is an Optician?

Opticians are those professionals who fit eyeglasses and contact lenses, as prescribed by an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist. These professionals analyze prescriptions and the patient’s occupation and habits in order to make recommendations about lenses and spectacles frames. Professionals trained in optical technology may work in one of the following areas: dispensing optician, private practice, optical laboratory technician, optical laboratory manager, store manager, field manager, manufacturer’s sales representative, instructor of optical technology, regional or national lecturer. There is flexibility and variation in the schedules that an optician may work.

What is the typical salary for an Optician?

Entry level salary for Licensed Opticians in the Cleveland area is between $25,000 and $36,000 per year. Those individuals who progress to management may earn significantly more.

Where can I obtain employment?

Opticians may be employed by Ophthalmic Dispensaries, Optical Laboratories, Ophthalmologists, or Optometrists. In addition, opticians may own and operate an their own Ophthalmic Dispensary.
