Tri-C to Host Tax Preparation Clinics for Earned Income Tax Credit Filers

Free clinics in February, March at Metro Campus

Illustration of person with tax forms for EITC tax clinicTo maximize federal income refunds for low-income earners, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) will host a series of tax preparation clinics to help eligible taxpayers claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Many eligible taxpayers are unaware of the benefit — approximately 19% of eligible filers didn’t claim the EITC in 2019, according to the IRS.

The first clinic takes place on Feb. 25 at the Metropolitan Campus, with two more to follow:

  • Saturday, Feb. 25, from 10 a.m.  ̶  2 p.m.
  • Wednesday, March 8, from 9 a.m.  ̶  1 p.m.
  • Thursday, March 9, from 2-6 p.m.

All clinics will take place at:

  • Tri-C Metropolitan Campus
    2900 Community College Ave.
Technology Learning Center, room 154 (Parking is available in Lot 4)

The EITC is a federal benefit designed to help low- and moderate-income families, including those with children. The credit can reduce taxes owed, increase a refund or provide a refund even if no taxes are owed.

"Tri-C is proud to partner with community organizations to proactively provide students and community members access to a service that can reduce poverty and improve their quality of life," said Denise McCory, Tri-C Metro Campus president. "As the cost of living continues to rise, tax filers can leave knowing that their taxes have been prepared and filed accurately without the stress of costly tax preparation fees or finding a location that isn’t easily accessible."

Participants who want to attend one of the events should visit the Cuyahoga EITC Coalition webpage or dial 211 to make an appointment and receive information on what identification and documents they need to bring.

Volunteer IRS-certified tax preparers will be available to assist participants to verify their eligibility for the EITC and file their returns electronically. The clinic provided preparation and filing to 40 families during the 2021 tax year, securing more than $49,000 in federal refunds and $5,382 in state refunds.
