Fall 2025 Commencement: Melissa Chacón Vargas Santiago Discovers Passion at Tri-C
What began as an adventure as an au pair soon became a life-changing journey for Melissa Chacón Vargas Santiago. She arrived in the United States from Costa Rica in 2018 to learn English and pursue higher education.
After completing the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) in 2020, Santiago discovered her passion for business and began her academic career at Tri-C in 2021.
Throughout her time at Tri-C, Santiago has been deeply involved in the College community. She was a member of the Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and actively participated in the Al Lopez Academic Alliance and the Tri-C Foundation. Her dedication earned her a spot on the dean's list every semester.
Santiago credits Tri-C with opening doors she never imagined were possible, providing educational, professional and financial opportunities that have shaped her personal and academic growth.
"My background has shaped my entire journey," she said. "I always aim for growth and excellence. I came from a family where studying is a privilege and finances weren't easy at home, so it made me an overachiever and a hardworking woman."
Santiago was selected by her classmates as the Student Speaker during the College's Fall Commencement celebration on Dec. 11 at the Wolstein Center. She will graduate Summa Cum Laude with an Associate of Arts from the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
She plans to continue her studies at Cleveland State University, where she will pursue a bachelor's degree in general business.
Describe your Tri-C experience. Has a specific person, class or event played a role in your success?
Tri-C helped me believe in myself again and know that I am capable of everything I can imagine. Tri-C opened doors I never expected I could walk through growing up in a foreign country.
How has Tri-C changed your life?
I worked in a renewable energy plant for almost two years in Costa Rica when I realized I wanted more. I decided to restart my education at Tri-C and shifted my major to business. I found out I am passionate about business, entrepreneurship and being a source for growth for myself and others. I love to help and see others succeed.
What advice do you have for your fellow graduates?
Do not give up, and do not stop. Keep believing in yourself and aim for the stars. You can go slowly but never stop until you achieve your dreams and goals.
Tri-C will celebrate the academic achievements of its newest graduates during Commencement on Dec. 11 at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland. Check our News and Events page leading up to the event for more highlights from the Class of 2025.
