Mammography Clinical Rotation Policy for Radiography Students
During clinical training, radiography students are afforded the opportunity to rotate through numerous imaging modalities including, but not limited to: computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, sonography, radiation therapy, interventional radiology and mammography. Tri-C’s Radiography program has an established policy regarding the placement of students in clinical mammography rotations to observe breast imaging. The policy may also apply to any imaging procedures performed by professionals who are of the opposite gender of the patient.
The program’s policy regarding student clinical rotations in mammography is based on the sound rationale presented in a position statement on student clinical mammography rotations adopted by the board of directors of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
View the JRCERT position statement here or on the JRCERT website.
The policy states that students of all genders will be offered the opportunity to participate in clinical mammography rotations. Program staff will make every effort to place male students in clinical mammography rotations at their primary clinical site if requested; however, they are not in a position to override clinical site policies that restrict clinical experiences in mammography to female students only. Male students are advised that placement in a mammography rotation is not guaranteed and is subject to whether or not their assigned primary clinical site will allow them to participate in mammographic imaging procedures.
Note that use of the terms “male” and “female” above aligns with the JRCERT’s position statement. However, Tri-C’s This Is Me initiative welcomes students to specify a preferred name and personal pronouns that align with their gender identity. It is the student’s responsibility to inform fellow students, program faculty and staff, and clinical site personnel of their preferred name and personal pronouns.
