Integrity Institute

Sometimes plagiarism is accidental and unintentional; sometimes it isn't. The Integrity Institute at Cuyahoga Community College educates students about all forms and types of plagiarism, and provides strategies to avoid making those mistakes in the future.

When an instructor determines that plagiarism has occurred in their class, the instructor has the option of referring that student to the Integrity Institute. Over the course of one hour, the Integrity Institute educates students about plagiarism and equips them with helpful strategies and techniques to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

In addition to diminishing the negative results of being accused of plagiarism, attending plagiarism school leaves students feeling that they are better equipped to understand and avoid plagiarism in the future, turning a potentially devastating situation into a more positive one.

How the Referral Process Works

  1. The faculty member fills out the Integrity Institute referral form and the student receives a copy of the submission in their email.
  2. The student schedules an Integrity Institute session. During the session, the student and an Integrity Institute instructor will:
    1. Discuss and review the assignment or section of the assignment that was identified as plagiarized.
    2. Review the sections of the Student Conduct Code and/or class syllabus that address plagiarism and academic integrity.
    3. Review and discuss examples of plagiarized work similar to the student's originally submitted work.
    4. Apply the strategies and techniques learned in the Integrity Institute to the student's originally submitted work.
  3. Once the student successfully completes each of the tasks above, the Integrity Institute will follow up with the faculty member.
  4. The faculty member will determine whether to allow the student to submit a revised assignment.

Cuyahoga Community College defines plagiarism as the use of published or unpublished words, ideas or other work that is not your own without full and clear acknowledgement of the source.

Examples of plagiarism include, but are not limited to:

  1. Using someone else’s information (regardless of whether you choose to quote or paraphrase) without citing the source
  2. Failing to use quotation marks when quoting a source word-for-word
  3. Failing to cite a paraphrased source
  4. Submitting work prepared by a person or agency that is in the business of selling of term papers or other academic materials
  5. Copying any information from the internet or any other source without properly acknowledging the source
  6. Resubmitting a portion of one’s own prior work, unless explicitly permitted to do so by the instructor in the current course
  7. Failing to adhere to your instructor's policy on the use of Artificial Intelligence as described in your class syllabus
