Math Placement

Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) uses ACT, SAT, high school cumulative GPA, high school math grades and previously earned college credits to determine students' placement in Math courses at the College. Please refer to the Math Placement Guide for more information.  If you do not meet one of the math placement measures, you will complete a placement test using ALEKS.  After Tri-C processes your ACT, SAT, high school transcript, or placement test documentation, you will receive an email within 72 hours with your course placement results.

The math placement requirement may be satisfied by meeting one of the options below. Refer to the tables below or the Math Placement Guide for more information. If you do not satisfy one of these options, you will begin the math placement process.

  • Satisfactory ACT or SAT math scores (test date within the last five years)
  • Earned associate degree, bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Grade of C or better in college-level math from an accredited institution

Students have choices!

As you begin the math placement process, it is important for you to know that you have choices!

ALEKS is a computer software that identifies your math strengths and weaknesses. After completing your first assessment, you can work to improve your score. By working through the ALEKS placement process, you can improve your skills and may also improve your placement level. Your placement level will determine what math class you will need to take.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Students can choose to take their first test as practice!
    • The ALEKS software will create a personalized learning path with self-study modules to help you improve your skills.
    • Always remember that you may not use outside resources, including a personal calculator, during your ALEKS assessment. However, you may use the built-in calculator that appears on certain questions during the test.
    • Please know that you will likely be asked math questions that you may not be prepared to answer. The system allows you to respond with an “I don’t know” answer. This is OK. If you need to use this answer, do so. It is expected that most students will use this answer at some point during their assessment.
  • Students can choose to take the course into which they originally placed!
    • You can choose to register for the math course you placed in. It is important for you to know that the ALEKS system has been able to help many students improve their scores in as little as five hours of work. This extra work can save you time and money.
  • Students can choose to retest!
    • If you choose to retest, you can take the placement up to five times, with practice in between attempts.
  • Students can choose to meet in-person with a math coach!
    • Math coaches can help you navigate through the ALEKS system and throughout the entire math placement process. Math coaches can work with you to help improve your score.
  • Taking your math placement:
    • You can take your test online or on-campus.
    • Follow "Step 3 - Take your Math Placement Test" below.
  • A math coach will reach out to discuss your placement score and help you understand your options.
  • If you are satisfied with your placement after your initial proctored assessment, you can register for the math course you qualify for based on your academic program requirements. A counselor can help you determine which courses are required for your program of study.
