Overview

Cuyahoga Community College's 100% Tobacco-Free Policy
Action prohibits use of any tobacco product on College grounds

Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) has adopted a tobacco-free policy that prohibits the use of any tobacco product on College grounds, effective Aug. 8, 2016.

The Tri-C Board of Trustees unanimously approved the 100% Tobacco-Free Campus policy to support a healthy environment for students, staff and visitors at the College.

The policy prohibits the use of any tobacco product, including cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, hookahs, oral tobacco and electronic cigarettes/vapes. It applies to anyone on any College grounds, from buildings to parking lots.

The tobacco-free policy ensures that students and faculty at Tri-C have fresh air and a healthy learning environment and it contributes to the well-being of our colleagues, safeguard the environment and assist those who desire to cease using tobacco products.

The policy follows a grant from Truth Initiative, the national public health organization responsible for the national truth® smoking prevention campaign. The grant was awarded to support the College’s efforts to create a tobacco-free environment.

Tri-C’s efforts are part of a growing state and national movement to clean the air on campuses. Currently, more than 1,500 higher education institutions in the United States have gone smoke- or tobacco-free, including 330 community colleges.

Today, 42 million Americans still smoke, a total that includes more than two million Ohio residents. Tobacco use remains the number-one cause of preventable death in this country.

Research also shows that there are dire health consequences for nonsmokers, too. Secondhand smoke exposure causes cancer, cardiovascular disease and other illnesses and is responsible for more than 41,000 deaths annually in the U.S.

The College offers tobacco cessation programs to students and staff as part of its effort.
