Honorlock
Tri-C has partnered with Honorlock, a leading remote proctoring solution, to enhance academic integrity in online courses and assessments. Honorlock will be our preferred online proctoring solution.
Honorlock's advanced software, including Live Pop-in™ technology, combines AI with live remote proctors to safeguard online exams, reduce student test anxiety, and support both students and faculty.
- Watch the Honorlock Student Demo Video for a step‑by‑step walkthrough of what taking an Honorlock exam looks like from a student's perspective.
- You can also use the Honorlock Student Tutorial to check that your system is compatible and learn how Honorlock works.
- If you experience issues with Honorlock, email OLAT or the help desk.
What browsers support Honorlock?
- Honorlock requires the use of the Honorlock browser extension, which is currently only available in Google Chrome.
I've installed the Honorlock extension, but it isn't working or won't turn on. How can I fix this?
- The Cause: The most common culprit is a conflict with other proctoring software extensions (such as Proctorio) installed on the same browser.
- Solution: Disable or completely remove competing proctoring extensions from Google Chrome. As an alternative best practice, you can create a dedicated Chrome profile used strictly for Honorlock testing to keep extensions completely isolated: Manage Chrome with multiple profiles
I get asked to enter a password when I try to access my quiz. What is causing this, and how do I bypass it?
- The Cause: For an Honorlock quiz hosted in Brightspace, you should never be prompted for a password. If you see a password prompt, it's usually because you are trying to access the exam using an unsupported browser (like Safari), or you do not have the Honorlock extension installed.
- Solution: Make sure you are using Google Chrome and have installed the Honorlock extension before trying to access your exam. If you still see a password field after this, contact your instructor or the Tri-C Help Desk for assistance.
Can I take an Honorlock exam on my smartphone or tablet?
- The Rules: Students cannot use a mobile device to take their exams; they must use a compatible desktop or laptop computer.
- Room Scans: If the settings for your exam require a Workspace Scan, you will need to use a smartphone's camera functionality to complete that specific environment verification check. For a complete breakdown of technical limitations, please refer to the System Requirements Guide.
- Tri-C has created an Honorlock Faculty Guide to help you set up your proctored exams in Brightspace.
- We also have a guide for setting up Honorlock with third party exams outside of Brightspace: Honorlock: Third Party Integration
- For more information about specific topics related to Honorlock, visit the Honorlock Help Center.
- If you are experiencing issues with Honorlock, email OLAT or the help desk.
Why am I not receiving email notifications or summary reports for flagged student exam sessions?
- The Cause: Honorlock only triggers automated email notifications when an actual violation occurs during an exam. High-level flags or proctor "pop-ins" do not automatically generate an email alert on their own.
- Action Needed: Please ensure your email notifications are properly enabled in your settings and that your preferred email address is designated to receive reports and get notifications when violations occur.
Students are reporting that the Honorlock extension isn't working or won't turn on. How can they fix this?
- The Cause: The most common culprit is a conflict with other proctoring software extensions (such as Proctorio) installed on the same browser.
- Solution: Advise students to disable or completely remove competing proctoring extensions from Google Chrome. As an alternative best practice, students can create a dedicated Chrome profile used strictly for Honorlock testing to keep extensions completely isolated: Manage Chrome with multiple profiles
My students are being repeatedly prompted to enter an exam password. What is causing this, and how do we bypass it?
- The Cause: When a Brightspace quiz has Honorlock enabled, you may notice that a code has appeared in the password field of the Brightspace exam settings. This password is automatically created by Honorlock and is used to ensure that students cannot access the quiz outside of an Honorlock proctoring session. Students will never need to manually enter this password to access the quiz. However, if you alter or delete this password, Honorlock will stop working correctly and students may see a password prompt. They may also see a password prompt if they are trying to access the exam using an unsupported browser (like Safari), or if they do not have the Honorlock Chrome extension installed.
- Solution: Remind students that Google Chrome is absolutely required for all Honorlock exams. Additionally, instructors should avoid editing, deleting, or sharing the underlying exam access codes directly with students, as doing so breaks the Honorlock authentication loop.
Can students use their smartphones to complete room scans or take their exams?
- The Rules: Students cannot use a mobile device to take their exams; they must use a compatible desktop or laptop computer.
- Room Scans: If your exam settings require a Workspace Scan, students will need to use their phone's camera functionality to complete that specific environment verification check. (Note: External side-angle camera features via the Honorlock Mobile App are currently not enabled for our institution but students will be able to use a smart phone as an option if this feature is enabled). For a complete breakdown of technical limitations, please refer to the System Requirements Guide.
A student claims they contacted Honorlock support. Is there a way for me to verify this interaction or view their chat transcript?
- Support While an Exam is Launched: If a student interacts with a proctor or live support agent while their exam session is active, you can view the conversation directly. Look for the Chat Transcripts button located in the exam's session review.
- Support Outside of an Exam being Launched: Students can provide their instructor with a ticket number and/or transcript. Faculty can also reach out directly to Honorlock support via the live chat by clicking the chat bubble in the Honorlock exam list or settings menu to obtain transcripts. Because your LMS role authenticates you as an Admin/Instructor, support can look up and share those verification details with you.
What happens if a student forgets to download the Honorlock extension before the exam begins?
- The Process: If a student attempts to launch a proctored test without the extension, Honorlock will automatically prompt them to install it before they can proceed.
- Instructor Note: When you enable Honorlock for a Brightspace quiz, an iframe will automatically be inserted in the quiz description. This will appear in the description field of your quiz settings as a rectangular window which may have the words "Block content from this web address" under it. Be careful not to delete or alter this frame in your quiz's description, or the prompt for students to download Chrome or install the Honorlock extension may not appear.
