Refresher Courses

VEAP Classes Begin January 23 and 25

Refresher Courses

Veterans Education Access Program prepares students for success in college. The goals of our Academic Enrichment program are to help students to feel confident within the college classroom and to motivate students to achieve the best possible scores on college placement exams so that they may continue to grow through education and career-preparedness.

Upon completion of refresher courses, the student will:

  • Demonstrate an increase in test scores
  • Understand Math and English concepts that will be covered in 900-level and/or 1000-level courses
  • Feel comfortable with basic computer operational tasks
  • Be familiar with campus resources and departments

Coursework

Our refresher program includes English, math, science, and computer coursework. In addition, we provide instruction on various college skills such as time management, goal setting, financial aid, note-taking, and campus resources. We also hold open tutoring hours for students who want extra help or to move at a quicker pace.

Math Topics Covered:

  • Basic Geometry
  • Exponents and Order of Operations
  • Fractions
  • Decimals
  • Rate, ratio, proportions, percent
  • Basic Statistics
  • Signed numbers and absolute value
  • Beginning Algebra
  • Graphing

 

English Topics Covered:

  • College-level essays
  • Sentence basics and the eight parts of speech
  • Grammar basics
  • Critical reading and thinking
  • Paragraphs

 

Computer Topics Covered:

  • Keyboarding
  • Email
  • Creating and sending documents
  • Accessing Internet-based classroom material
  • Utilizing online learning resources, such as video

 

Science Topics Covered:

  • Seminar in Biology
  • Seminar in Physics
  • Seminar in Earth Science
  • Seminar in Public Health

Classroom Schedules

Veterans Education Access Program refresher courses run 6-9 weeks. We offer weekend, weekday, and evening classes, which run throughout the year, depending on sufficient participant enrollment. Each class meeting includes a seminar in all offered topics, along with short breaks and Lunch-n-Learn sessions to disseminate skills and information necessary for students.

Eligibility Requirements

  • DD-214 discharge other than dishonorable
  • High school education (diploma or GED)
  • No previous college degree
  • Demonstrated academic need based on an individual skills assessment

Participants need to provide a photocopy of one of the following service member's documents:

  • DD214
  • Active duty or reserve ID card
  • Current VA card
  • Current retiree ID card
  • Current ID card
