About Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS)

EHS involves creating a systematic approach to complying with environmental regulations, developing sustainable practices and reducing a company’s waste streams. EHS also includes measures to address worker protection, indoor air quality, job hazards and other aspects of workplace safety that could affect the health and well-being of employees.

Environmental, Health and Safety Technology (EHST) Program Overview

The EHST degree program prepares students for a variety of careers in the field. Students who have an interest in environmental work may focus their efforts on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compliance through skill development and technology application in: air monitoring; water and ground water sampling; storm water management; and water quality assessments. Additional knowledge will be acquired in soil sampling, evaluation of environmental risks and remediation of environmental contaminants. Other students may focus their skills in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations through enhanced knowledge of safety, worker protection, chemical awareness, and emergency response and preparedness.

EHST students may earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree or a post-degree certificate. The AAS degree provides direct-to-job opportunities and offers an academic pathway to local four-year institutions. The EHST post-degree certificate is a one-year course of concentrated study. It is intended for those with a prior degree (associate’ degree or higher) or to others who are currently working in the EHS field to broaden their knowledge or those who wish to change or modify their career. The first semester of the program focuses mainly on introductory courses and general proficiencies to prepare the student for the second semester of courses specific to the EHS field through technology applications and skill development.
