Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland Selects Tri-C Student as 2020 Youth of the Year
College Credit Plus student Jayla VanHorn wins $5,000 scholarship with the honor
Jayla VanHorn hopes to one day report the news. At the moment, though, the Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) student is making headlines.
The 17-year-old from Cleveland was recently named the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland’s 2020 Youth of the Year. The senior at Cleveland’s Horizon Science Academy attends Tri-C through the state’s College Credit Plus dual enrollment program.
As Youth of the Year, VanHorn will receive a $5,000 scholarship from Cleveland Indians Charities, according to a story by News 5 Cleveland. She hopes to transfer from Tri-C to The Ohio State University after graduating from high school.
She has been involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland’s Broadway Club since she was a fifth grader. She is currently a junior staff member at the club.
The aspiring sports writer is also editor of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland newspaper.
Her local award advances her to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America regional Youth of the Year competition, where a winner will be announced March 25.
