Nov. 25 - Message from the Provost: Gratitude Video, Faculty Development, Fall Commencement
2020 has been challenging in so many ways, and many are finding it difficult to find things we can be thankful for at this time of this year. Although I don’t in any way discount the serious nature of what is happening around us as COVID cases are exploding and we are all trying to keep ourselves and our family and friends safe, I can speak for the entire administrative team when I say we are all grateful for our outstanding faculty who have done so much to support our students in these trying times. You have been a consistent and positive force in the lives of our students who struggle with so much. Offering our deepest appreciation doesn’t seem to be sufficient.
In this spirit of gratitude, I want to share a short video with you from the Association of College and University Educators that hopefully expresses a little of how we feel about you, and more importantly, how students feel and are impacted by faculty. I share this universal feeling of appreciation as a reminder of the important and lasting impact each of you has made with our students. You are awesome! Student Thanks
A few reminders as we approach the end of the semester:
- Our Faculty Development team continues to host training and support sessions for our faculty. You can see the latest courses and workshops here: Faculty Forums and Professional Development Opportunities
- Although we would all rather be celebrating in person, we unfortunately have no choice but to hold our fall commencement ceremony virtually on Thursday, December 17 at 6 p.m. We are providing faculty with the opportunity to record a short congratulatory message to our December graduates. To participate and record a video, I encourage you to visit Flipgrid.com/commencement2020 to record a short (30 seconds) message by Tuesday, Dec. 15 at noon. The recordings will be available on the Commencement website and will be sent to all students following the ceremony.
- There are two exciting faculty professional development opportunities you may wish to participate in. Both opportunities have an application deadline of Tuesday, December 1.
1. The Ohio Professional Development Consortium invites faculty teaching at institutions of higher education across the state to engage in a series of workshops and events on the topic of inclusive teaching with the goal of earning an Inclusive Teaching in Higher Education Endorsement. This endorsement recognizes instructors who complete 9-12 hours of professional development and pursue implementation of evidence-based instructional strategies. Please visit this website for more information.
2. Through a partnership with the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) and Achieving the Dream, the Ohio Association of Community Colleges (OACC) Success Center is able to offer a limited number of full-time faculty the opportunity to enroll in ACUE’s course in Effective Online Teaching Practices this winter/spring. This FREE 25-week course prepares faculty in evidence-based online teaching practices proven through independently validated research to improve student achievement and close equity gaps. Faculty who complete the program earn a nationally recognized Certificate in Effective College Online Instruction; the only college teaching credential endorsed by the American Council on Education (ACE). This free course begins in January 2021 and runs for the duration of Spring Semester. After taking a break for the summer, the cohort will start again in fall 2021, finishing in October. Faculty will complete approximately 1 module a week, with an average of a 3-hour commitment per week. Due to the heavy workload and two semester commitment, participating faculty will receive 3 ESUs for participating: 1.5 ESUs in spring 2021 and 1.5 ESUs in fall 2021. Faculty must commit to the full program to participate. Visit this website for more information: Effective Online Teaching
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Nov. 18 - Cuyahoga County Stay-at-Home Advisory
Due to the increase in COVID-19 cases, Cuyahoga County has issued a stay-at-home advisory, effective immediately through Dec. 17. This is 28 days or two consecutive incubation periods of the virus. The advisory asks residents to leave home only to go to school or work, or for essentials such as food, medicine and medical care.
Our plans are in keeping with this advisory:
- On-ground student services will begin remote operations on Monday, Nov. 23 and are scheduled to resume on Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
- In-person classes will continue through Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving.
- Classes will take place remotely after Thanksgiving through the end of the Fall term (Nov. 30 – Dec. 13), with a few exceptions for hands-on classes or labs, such as health careers, approved by the VP, dean and/or campus president.
We will continue to monitor the situation and advise of other changes moving forward. In the meantime – for your safety and that of others – please limit your travel, avoid large gatherings, wear a mask, wash your hands frequently and maintain six feet of social distancing.

Nov. 18 - Student Services Change, Updates to COVID-19 Contigency Plan, and Fall and Spring Semester Changes
The COVID-19 Contingency Plan and Fall and Spring Semester Changes document you received via email following the Oct. 29 town hall has been updated for clarification. This includes a change to student services operations announced yesterday. New or updated information is highlighted below.
Due to the continued rise in COVID-19 cases, the College decided yesterday, Nov.17, that on-ground student services will begin remote operations on Monday, Nov. 23 (rather than after Thanksgiving break as previously announced). Current on-ground classes will continue until Thanksgiving break as planned.
The following yellow highlights indicate updates to changes announced at the Oct. 29 town hall:
CONTINGENCY PLAN FOR LEVEL 4 (PURPLE) STATUS IN CUYAHOGA COUNTY
Cuyahoga County is currently at Level 3 (red) status, which indicates very high exposure and spread of the virus. Level 4 (purple) status indicates severe exposure and spread. Neither designation comes with a mandated shutdown, but the governor or County Board of Health could make that recommendation.
If the county remains at Level 3/red:
- The College will continue current on-ground classes through Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving.
- During that time, we will continue to closely monitor guidance from the state and county and adjust our plans if needed.
- Updated post-Thanksgiving plans are outlined in the following section under “Fall Semester.”
If the county moves to Level 4/purple:
- The College will go fully remote until the county returns to a lower level. This means that all on-ground classes and workforce programs, as well as student and administrative services (with the exception of essential personnel) would take place remotely. Students should work with their instructor(s).
- Make-up skills labs, if needed, would occur when the county has returned to a lower level.
- Off-site clinicals would continue at the discretion of the clinical site.
- Faculty can use their offices for remote teaching with campus president approval. There may be other specialized exceptions, such as staff to care for animals in the Vet Tech program.
______________________________________
ACADEMIC CALENDAR ADJUSTMENTS
A series of adjustments to the academic calendar for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 will further limit potential on-campus exposures by extending remote operations after the fall and winter holidays, eliminating Spring Break and ending the spring semester a week early.
Fall Semester
- As initially planned, the majority of classes will take place remotely after Thanksgiving through the end of the Fall term (Nov. 30 – Dec. 13), with a few exceptions for hands-on classes or labs, such as health careers approved by the VP, dean and/or campus president.
- ProctorU stations will be open for finals week by appointment only on Thursday, Dec. 10 and Friday, Dec. 11.
- NEW: All on-ground student services and administrative operations, with the exception of essential personnel, will also take place remotely for two weeks following Thanksgiving (Nov. 30 – Dec. 9). This will happen regardless of county levels (red or purple).
- NEW: On-ground student services will resume Dec. 10 and run through Dec. 23 on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All other administrative staff who had been working on-site prior to Nov. 23 will also resume working on-site on Dec. 10 with supervisor approval.
- Campus bookstores will be open Dec. 7-18 for book buybacks. Hours will be Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Virtual Commencement will take place on Dec. 17.
- The College will be closed for Winter Break from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1.
Spring Semester
- NEW: All on-ground student services and administrative operations, with the exception of essential personnel, will take place remotely for two weeks following Winter Break (Jan. 4-13).
- NEW: From Jan. 14 to Feb. 4, on-ground student services will be available on Mondays and Thursdays, with extended hours (10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.). All other administrative staff who had been working on-site prior to Winter Break will resume working on-site on Jan. 14 with supervisor approval.
- Beginning Feb. 8, on-ground student services will return to regular hours — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. — on Mondays and Thursdays.
- Super Saturday enrollment events will take place Jan. 16 and Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Faculty Colloquium will take place virtually on Jan. 12.
- Campus Days will take place virtually on Jan. 13.
- On Jan. 19, full-term (16-week) classes and Session A (first 8-week) classes will begin as scheduled.
- On Feb. 1, Session O (14-week) classes will begin as scheduled.
- NEW: Faculty and deans will work together to reinforce/add additional classes to the 14-week term (Session O), which begins Feb. 1. This will provide additional time and opportunities for students to register when on-ground service hours resume in mid-January.
- NEW: Spring Break (March 15-21) is cancelled, and Session B (second eight-week) classes will begin March 15 (rather than March 22).
- NEW: Spring semester will end one week early, on May 9. Finals week will occur May 3-9.
- NEW: Faculty Convocation will take place on May 12 rather than May 19.
- Plans for Spring Commencement will be announced during the spring semester.
There are no changes to the Summer 2021 term at this time, but we will advise of any changes prior to summer registration. Summer term is scheduled to start June 1.

Nov. 13 - Provost Message - Town Hall, Professional Development, Spring Schedule, Service Credits
I hope everyone enjoyed our mid-week break for Veterans Day. We thank each and every one of you who have served or have family members who have served our country in any capacity. We owe each of you a debt of gratitude and respect that goes beyond words. Thank each of you for your service.
It is amazing to me that we’re talking about the end of the fall semester and considering how we might celebrate our long-standing traditions of Thanksgiving and the holidays with our family and friends with the pandemic still looming…and not just looming, but continuing at record pace. What we thought would be a “few weeks” of remote service and course delivery has turned into a new way of working for the near future. As we look toward a time of giving thanks, I try to step back and take pleasure in the small things that give me peace. Friendship, family, colleagues, meaningful work and good health. I realize not everyone can take stock in all of these things, and there is much we can’t do or celebrate, but trying to focus on the important things that give me peace helps put the rest in perspective. I am thankful for each of you, and wish you a peaceful and relaxing few days over the Thanksgiving break.
A few updates below…
- For those of you unable to join Dr. Johnson at Tuesday’s Town Hall, you can watch the recording by clicking here: Watch the Town Hall
- Our Faculty Development team continues to host training and support sessions for our faculty. You can see the latest courses and workshops here: Faculty Forums and Professional Development Opportunities
- As was previously announced, the College has made several revisions to the spring semester schedule as a part of our ongoing efforts to keep all our students, faculty and staff as safe as possible as COVID cases continue to rise. Important changes to note for Spring semester include:
o Faculty Colloquium will take place virtually on Jan. 12 with Campus Days taking place virtually on Jan. 13 as originally planned. No change here.
o On Jan. 19, full-term (16-week) classes and Session A (first 8-week) classes will begin as originally scheduled.
o Faculty and deans will work together to reinforce/add additional classes to the 14-week term (Session O), which begins Feb. 1. This will provide additional time and opportunities for students to register once our on ground service hours resume mid-January.
o Spring Break (March 15-21) is cancelled, and Session B (second eight-week) classes will begin March 15 (rather than March 22).
o Spring semester will end one week early, on May 9.
o Finals week will occur May 3-9.
o Faculty Convocation will take place on May 12 rather than May 19.
o Plans for Spring Commencement will be announced during the spring semester.
o There are no changes to the summer 2021 term at this time and is scheduled to start June 1 as originally planned. - As you know, our current COVID situation has required numerous changes and updates to our course schedules, and we are building and managing a Collegewide schedule very differently than in the past. This process has led to an increased time commitment and work on the part of our faculty coordinators. In order to recognize this additional work, and in conjunction with faculty AAUP leadership, we have modified the faculty coordinator role for AY 21-22 so that coordinators may earn service credits in addition to their ESUs as noted in the table below. If you are a coordinator and have questions about earning service credits, please contact your associate dean. We thank all of our faculty coordinators during these unusual and demanding times. We can’t thank you all enough for your commitment.
