March 26 - Provost Message: Faculty Developmnent, Schedule Build, CBE, ALLY, OTM

I hope this small dose of great weather the first week of spring helps rejuvenate you like it does me. What a difference a little warmth and sunshine makes! Hoping that the winds today aren’t messing up your power and Wi-Fi and you’re looking forward to the weekend. Below are a few updates on dates and projects I wanted to provide you with:

  • You can continue to look for upcoming College-wide training and professional development opportunities by vising our Faculty Development Calendar.
  • Based on direct feedback from faculty coordinators, the spring and summer 2022 schedule build timeline has been extended until April 9. Please continue to work collaboratively across campuses and with your associate deans to build a schedule that supports 60% on-ground coursework. Deans will begin their review of the schedule on April 12.
  • As access continues to be one of the College’s foundational principals, we remain committed to working with faculty to design innovative new programs and academic delivery that remove barriers to education for our students. Our IT faculty have expressed their interest in developing a competency-based post-degree certificate in cybersecurity, so we have launched a task force to explore providing this credential through competency-based education (CBE). Over the next several months you will hear more about CBE and the work of this group as they support faculty in developing curriculum and identifying college processes and systems that may need to be modified. Since this would be our first certificate or degree offered in this format, we will need to pursue approval from the state and the Higher Learning Commission.
  • I want to thank the members of the synchronous teaching and ALLY committees for their work over the past months, and I look forward to sharing more information about their recommendations in support of faculty and students. The synchronous teaching committee will have recommendations for faculty who teach synchronously on protecting student privacy and their own intellectual property particularly when recording class sessions. The work from the ALLY Committee will highlight faculty responsibilities in creating accessible content and how the institution will provide support. Look for more information (emails and training sessions) beginning late spring.
  • Significant changes to the Ohio Transfer Module (OTM) are being implemented by the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) over the next few years. In general, ODHE has created pathways in the OTM for both students in Guaranteed Transfer Pathways (OGTPs) and for students who may be undecided as to their academic path. They have also, in collaboration with statewide faculty discipline panels, created new learning outcomes for each OTM category. CADRE, CLOA and our various College offices are working together to determine our next steps and will begin sharing information at May Convocation counterparts meetings.

Thank you to everyone working on the initiatives above. We have so much important work together. I’m looking forward to sharing information on our summer and fall on ground service hours in the next few weeks. Hope you have a chance to enjoy the warm weather this weekend, and thanks for all you do!

March 5 - Vaccine Scheduling with ArmorVax App

Yesterday, we provided information regarding vaccination options for Lorain County residents. In addition to Lorain County, many other county health departments in Ohio – including Cuyahoga, Lake, Medina and Stark – have partnered with ArmorVax to help streamline the vaccine scheduling process. Participating boards of health are in the process of updating their webpages with ArmorVax scheduling information.

What is ArmorVax?
ArmorVax is a digital scheduling system that allows eligible residents of participating counties to schedule COVID-19 vaccination appointments as they become available. It is not a vaccine provider.

How does it work?
You must create an ArmorVax account to access appointments. You can do so at armorvax.com or by downloading the app.

You may only register for an account when you become eligible based on Ohio’s phased vaccine approach. Once your account is activated, you can search for available vaccine appointments by location.

Residents who have previously signed up for their county board of health’s notification system are encouraged to create an ArmorVax account as well.

The Ohio Department of Health is also working to create a centralized scheduling website for vaccinations. We will share that information as it becomes available.

March 5 - Provost Message: Dr. Johnson ATD, Jeff Tuma Award, Faculty Development, Women's Summit, Second 8-weeks, Great Colleges To Work For Survey

I am excited to share with you that Dr. Alex Johnson has been named the chair of the board for Achieving The Dream (ATD) at their February Board of Directors meeting. Achieving the Dream, as many of you may know, is a recognized leader in promoting evidence based institutional improvement for community colleges, with a focus on equity, access and completion for community college students. Tri-C has been a member of ATD since 2005, becoming an ATD Leader College in 2009 and an ATD Leader College of Distinction in 2018. We have worked with the organization as well as our ATD colleague colleges on numerous initiatives that have increased success and completion rates. Dr. Johnson’s continuing work with this organization will support of our efforts to increase student success and completion rates for all of our students. He always makes us proud!

I am also very honored to share with you that the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) will present one of its 2021 Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty awards to the late Jeff Tuma, assistant professor of philosophy. Jeff will be recognized during a virtual ceremony during the AACC Conference in May. This award recognizes those faculty who make a difference in student’s lives not only through teaching, but through supporting students in innovative and meaningful ways outside the classroom. For those of us who knew Jeff and his passion for his work and his students, this is such a well-deserved recognition. We are also humbled that Jeff’s family will be joining us for the ceremony in May when he receives this honor. For more information on this award, visit: Tuma Honored With Parnell Distinguished Faculty Award.

You can continue to look for upcoming College-wide training and professional development opportunities by vising our Faculty Development Calendar.

Tri-C will be hosting its first virtual women’s summit, Dare to be Powerful: Inspiring Women to Use Heart, Voice and Mind” on Friday, March 26 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. This event is focused on inspiring and empowering women through creating a virtual inclusive environment. To learn more about this event and to register, visit: Women's Summit.

Registration for our second 8 week spring session, which begins March 15, is open. We encourage our faculty to connect with students to remind them they have the opportunity to review the schedule to determine whether if they might pick up an additional degree requirement during this short session.

As noted by Dr. Johnson in his recent email, later this month Tri-C will participate in the Great Colleges to Work For Program Survey, an important opportunity to share your feedback on communication at Tri-C as well as several other topics. The survey utilizes the ModernThink Higher Education Insights Survey which measures institutional culture and workplace quality and is in cooperation with The Chronicle of Higher Education. We value input from all of our faculty, and to that end this survey is being distributed to all full-time faculty and a random set of adjunct faculty. I encourage everyone who receives a survey to participate to provide your important insight and feedback about a wide variety of categories across College operations.
