Tri-C student among those awarded scholarships in connection with Heroes Run
September 20, 2016
A Cuyahoga Community College student was among four descendants of active and fallen Cleveland police and firefighters who were awarded scholarship money on Sunday, as part of the 15th annual Heroes Run.
Meredith Schuerger received a $2,000 scholarship from Cleveland Firefighters Local 93, in honor of her great-grandfather, Ralph Simon. Along with three fellow firefighters, Simon perished in a magnesium explosion at Metallurgical Inc. in 1966.
Schuerger is the third descendent of Simon to receive a scholarship in connection with Heroes Run.
In addition to Cleveland Firefighters Local 93, the Cleveland Police Patrolman’s Association and St. Joseph Academy also awarded scholarship money to area students. A total of $8,000 in scholarships were awarded in connection with this year’s run.
The Heroes Run includes a five-mile run, two-mile run/walk and children’s run, through Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood and the Cleveland Metroparks. Proceeds benefit the West Park Cleveland Police and Firefighter Memorial Scholarship Fund. Learn more here.
