Student Success Story, Magdalis Galarza
May 05, 2015
Originally from Puerto Rico, Magdalis Galarza came to Cleveland in 2013.
“My passions always were science and food,” Galarza said. “I went to college to get my bachelor’s degree in general sciences, but after finishing, I still wasn’t sure about my career path. That’s when I decide to move from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Cleveland.”
While she had never worked in a restaurant, Galarza knew she loved cooking.
“When I was a kid, I always wanted to help the grownups in the kitchen,” she said. “My basic culinary knowledge was learned from my grandmother and my mother.”
After arriving in Cleveland, Galarza discovered Tri-C’s website and the Hospitality Management program. She applied online, transferred all her credits and started on two degrees.
In December 2014, Galarza received her Associate of Arts degree in Culinary Arts, Magna Cum Laude, plus three certificates: personal chef, baking and pastry, and certified culinarian. She’s receiving her second degree in Hospitality Management in May 2015.
That’s also when she’ll compete against other culinary students from around the country in the Ultimate Culinary Clash. As the winner of Tri-C’s Culinary Clash, Galarza is representing Cleveland in this epic culinary battle sponsored by InterContinental Hotels.
Thanks to Tri-C, Glarza got an internship at Fire Food and Drink, where she now works as a sauté chef. She hopes to one day have her own business and explore world cuisine.
“Tri-C has helped me turn my passion into a career,” Galarza said.
