August 27, 2014
William H. Gary, Sr., has been named executive vice president of Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®)'s Workforce and Economic Development Division (WEDD).
Gary brings more than three decades of private and public sector management experience to Tri-C. His background includes leadership roles in a variety of fields, including higher education, steel manufacturing, health care, information systems, telecommunications and aviation.
“William Gary offers unparalleled expertise when it comes to workforce and economic development issues,” said Alex Johnson, president of Tri-C. “With his guidance, the College will continue building programs and training workers to grow the economy in Greater Cleveland.”
Gary spent the past 14 years as vice president of workforce development at Northern Virginia Community College, where he led regional economic development initiatives and oversaw job training programs. In 2010, local officials there appointed him to a task force charged with finding ways to better attract and retain businesses in the community just outside Washington, D.C.
He is past president of the National Council on Workforce Education, an association of community colleges and workforce and education professionals affiliated with the American Association of Community Colleges.
Gary also has testified before Congressional Committees on emerging workforce issues.
Gary holds a master’s degree in industrial relations from Rutgers University in New Jersey and a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College in Georgia.
He replaces Susan Muha, who retired in June after more than a decade at the helm of WEDD. Muha oversaw the College’s workforce program from 1997 to 2004 and again from 2011 to 2014.
