Peace Officer Basic Training Academy (POBT)
Approximately 30 weeks from first day to completion.
Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) Certified

The Police Academy, also known as The Peace Officer Basic Training (POBT) Academy, is a rigorous program is designed for individuals who have made the career decision to be police officers in the state of Ohio. In addition to the state mandated POBT curriculum, students participate in specialized training to enhance their background and provide greater career opportunities. Students who successfully complete their Peace Officer Basic Training Academy earn 24 credit hours. 

Tri-C POBT Academies begin each April and September. The deadline for application submission is typically one month prior to the start of the Academy.Graduate Ryan Fewell BAS 10-038 Stops & Approaches training

Students seeking enrollment in Cuyahoga Community College’s POBT:

Must meet all entry requirements according to the due dates specified in the Application Packet including:

  • Pass the Entry Physical Fitness Assessment Exam
  • Successfully pass a National WebCheck for Law Enforcement (BCI&I/FBI)
  • Get a physical from their physician
  • Be a high school graduate or have successfully completed the G.E.D. program
  • Have a valid Ohio driver’s license and currently have full driving privileges in the State of Ohio
  • Must not have a criminal background
  • Should be at least 20 years old at the time of acceptance to The Academy.


Students who are accepted for enrollment in Cuyahoga Community College’s POBT:

  • Are in class five days a week: Monday –Thursday nights from 6:00pm-10:00pm and Saturdays from 8:00am – 5:00pm.
  • Are registered as full-time students, carrying 12 credit hours each for two semesters.
  • May apply for and use financial aid, if qualified.
  • Meet requirements for using Veteran’s Administration and Ohio National Guard Scholarship Assistance Program funds.
  • Must provide own handgun for firearms training.

Recruits from BAS 10-085 practice high intensity Stops & Approaches techniques.


Tri-C offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Law Enforcement with a concentration in Basic Police Academy. For more information on the Associate degree contact the Enrollment Office at 800-954-8742.

Important Update- Repeated Courses and Financial Aid

Upcoming Academies:
September 9, 2013 - Application packets will be availble in May. Application packets may be requested via e-mail or call our office to be placed on the mailing list. 

Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) - For those wishing to be considered as candidates for the September Academy, one PFA per month will be held in June, July and August. Call for details.

Graduation:
Congratulations to BAS 11-082!
This class had the highest class average test score on the State Certification Examination in the 46 year history of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission.

BAS 12-085 is scheduled to take their State Certification Examination on May 29, 2013 with graduation ceremonies scheduled for Friday, June 7, 2013.
