Comprehensive Patient Access Specialist Program 

The Patient Access Specialist program is fast track non-credit certificate program designed to prepare individuals for multiple entry level opportunities available in the hospital Patient Access department. The Patient Access Specialist role includes duties of registrations, insurance verification, scheduling, financial counseling and customer service to patients and family members. These duties are performed in a hospital setting in their admitting department, out-patient surgery and emergency room.

In addition to preparing individuals for this role, the Patient Access Specialist program will address topics covered on the national Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) exam offered through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM).


Deadline to apply for the CHAA exam are as follows:

January   November 30th
April   February 28th
July   May 31st
October   August 31st

The Patient Access Specialist coursework can be taken either as a comprehensive day-time program with ia job shadowing experience: Background check required at student's expense or a flexibly scheduled program (no job shadowing experience.)

To bypass a course within the program a college transcript or certification credentials must be submitted to the Center for Health Industry Solutions office identifying the course was successfully completed.

To meet the demand in this growing field and prepare for the national certification exam the program consists of 5 courses. PAS Program topic areas Include:

  • Medical Terminology
  • Essentials of Electronic Health Records 
  • Fundamentals of Billing Reimbursement
  • Patient Access Specialist Fundamentals 
  • The Professional Healthcare Environment

CHAA Certified Individuals- don’t let your certification expire!
As a CHAA certified individual you are responsible to maintain your certification every 2 years.*
 
*Requirements for CHAA Certification Maintenance can be found at: http://www.naham.org/?CHAACertMaint Hours begin accruing immediately after you pass your CHAA exam. Requirements are due in the month of April the two years after your testing year. For example, if you tested in October 2012, NAHAM requires your submissions in April 2014.

Please note the differentiation: Related courses taken through the College’s workforce and economic development healthcare division will apply full clock hours towards NAHAM contact hours; College based courses from the academic side of the College count towards 3 contact hours per semester.
