A MOOC is a Massive Open Online Course – an online course designed to serve large numbers of students in an open learning platform. They can be free or extremely low cost, and many institutions are working on models of sustainability that charge students for certificates, testing, or college credit once they have successfully completed the course.
This type of course provides an ideal opportunity for students seeking to improve their knowledge, skills and abilities and is perfect for the motivated, self-directed learner committed to their own education. Tri-C is continually looking at ways of improving the online learning environment. The College utilizes new and effective, technology-enabled methods of teaching and learning that focus on student success and engagement by increasing learning productivity and ultimately improving degree completion.
Tri-C’s Dev Ed Math MOOC
Tri-C has received a grant from the Gates Foundation to design, develop, and implement a MOOC for Developmental Education in Math. The course is four weeks in length and is similar to the content that is currently being used in the two-week bridge courses. The course will use Blackboard Course Sites, which is a hosted cloud-based version of our current Blackboard platform. Bb Course Sites has hosted MOOCs previously and the site shares the same look and feel as our current Blackboard courses. The MOOC will use game mechanics to maximize student motivation.
The Dev Ed Math MOOC will allow Tri-C to:
- Addressing the developmental education challenge and Tri-C’s priority to help students get to college ready status at a faster pace.
- Opportunities for partnership with K-12 by targeting high schools students and helping students get to college ready status before they enroll at Tri-C.
- Supporting returning students who want/need a brief math refresher.
- Contributing to explore innovative and experiential practices in teaching and learning; being a leader among community colleges, as a Board Member Institution in the League for Innovation in the Community College.
