Tri-C Students Awarded Scholarships Honoring Dr. King

Twelve recipients recognized for academic excellence and community service

Tri-C Students Awarded Scholarships Honoring Dr. KingCuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by awarding scholarships to 12 students during the College’s 40th annual birthday observance of the civil rights leader.

The scholarships from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Scholarship Fund recognize academic excellence and community service by Tri-C students who graduated from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District or other Cuyahoga County schools.

The 2017 scholarship recipients include:
• John Chavers of Cleveland, a graduate of John Marshall High School who is studying criminal justice
• Nakia Gainer of Macedonia, a graduate of Shaw High School who is studying early childhood education
• Ronieta Lee of Cleveland, a graduate of John Hay Cleveland Extension who is studying criminal justice
• Carline Long-Rice of Cleveland, a graduate of East Tech High School who is working toward an Associate of Arts degree
• Janice McCoy of Cleveland, a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School who is studying business management
• Melinda Mercado of Cleveland, a graduate of Lincoln West High School who is studying pre-medical assisting
• Haley Morris of Cleveland, a graduate of the Cleveland School of Arts who is studying event planning
• Briana Nichols of Cleveland, a graduate of South High School who is working toward an Associate of Arts degree
• Antoinette Reno of Cleveland, a graduate of James Ford Rhodes High School who is studying early childhood education
• Danielle Stabler of Cleveland, a graduate of Martin Luther King Jr. High School who is working toward an Associate of Arts degree
• Gabriella Thomas of Cleveland, a graduate of John Hay High School who is working toward an Associate of Arts degree
• Shayvona Williams of Cleveland, a graduate of the Cleveland School of Arts who is working toward an Associate of Arts degree

The Cuyahoga Community College Foundation established the scholarship fund in 1991 with support from the Cleveland Teachers Union and other generous donors.
