Racquel Ward is Player and Pitcher of the Year; Bryan Komlos is Coach of the Year
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) softball player Racquel Ward has been named 2017 Player and Pitcher of the Year by the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC), which announced its postseason awards this week.
The OCCAC also honored Tri-C’s Bryan Komlos as Coach of the Year after he guided the Challengers (28-10) to a conference title. Komlos has been the team’s head coach since 2010.
Ward dominated on the pitching mound for the Challengers this season, going 18-5 with one save. She struck out 137 batters in 124.1 innings while throwing 13 complete games in 18 starts.
She ranks among the national leaders in wins, strikeouts and ERA and won the conference Pitcher of the Week Award six times this season.
Offensively, Ward batted .453 with a team-leading seven home runs and 45 RBI.
The sophomore from Ashland is in the pre-nursing program at Tri-C.
Four teammates joined Ward in earning all-conference honors, including:
- Outfielder Courtney Cadle, who batted .382 with a team-leading 41 runs scored. The freshman from Monroe, Michigan, is working toward an Associate of Arts degree at the College.
- Second baseman Madison Smith, who batted .373 with 20 RBI and 30 runs scored. The sophomore from Napoleon, Ohio, is working toward an Associate of Arts degree at Tri-C.
- Shortstop Serena Tucciarelli, who batted .395 with a home run and 35 RBI. The sophomore from Garfield Heights will graduate with an Associate of Arts degree this summer.
- First baseman Beth Wills, who batted a team-leading .455 with three home runs and 22 RBI. The freshman from Huber Heights, Ohio, is studying human services.
The conference title won by the Challengers is their first since 2013 and qualified the team for the NJCAA Regional XII softball tournament. Tri-C plays its home games at Western Campus in Parma.
