HIGHLAND HILLS – Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) Eastern Campus, 4250 Richmond Road, has a full schedule of events and cultural activities, including speakers, discussions and displays, planned for International Education Week, November 16-20.
International Education Week will kick off with a day of cultural activities, including a book discussion on “Three Cups of Tea,” written by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin, from noon to 1 p.m. in the library inside the Student Services Building. Participants are invited to sip tea and discuss a man’s dangerous and difficult quest to build schools in the wildest parts of Pakistan. Ten Thousand Villages, a local retailer which helps provide vital, fair income to thousands of artisans in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, will be selling handicrafts from around the world, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the President’s Plaza, Student Services Building.
Comparative educational events are planned the following day and will include a student forum called “Education in My Country vs. Education in This Country —What Gives?” from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the President’s Plaza, Student Services Building. Tri-C students from seven different countries will discuss their experiences in the U.S. education system and how it compares with the education systems in their home countries. From 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, Performing Arts Center Lobby, Alina Fernandez, the daughter of Fidel Castro, will give an intimate account of growing up in Cuba as she tells the story of her life in Cuba and offers her insight as one of the Cuban elite.
An International Film Display will also be held in the library. Throughout the Eastern campus, presentations on a range of topics, including international business, education and language will be held each day.
International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. The end-goal is to prepare Americans for life in a global, interdependent, environment. As part of this initiative, Tri-C aims to advance students to become globally aware and culturally sensitive.
