CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga Community College is launching a new associate degree program, Sport and Exercise Studies (SES), this fall semester. The SES degree is designed to prepare students for an entry-level position such as a fitness specialist, personal trainer, sport coach, health-fitness instructor, recreation coordinator/director, floor supervisor, or group fitness instructor.
The U.S. Department of Labor has predicted that the need for skilled professionals in the fitness industry will continue to increase due to rapid job growth in health clubs and fitness facilities. Coursework for the degree includes anatomy and physiology; instructional techniques of cardiorespiratory, flexibility, and resistance training; sport injury care; CPR and first aid; sport management; fitness coaching; exercise physiology; kinesiology; exercise testing; exercise program design; personal training and group fitness instructor certification preparation; and practicum experience.
“We decided that there was a need to develop a program at Tri-C that better educates students in the field of sport and exercise studies,” said Dr. Holly Clemens, associate professor of physical education and health at Tri-C. “The job market is also promising, with a rapid growth of 2.5 percent in the next five to 10 years.”
Students can enroll now for fall classes, which are available at all three main campuses. Fall courses include SES 1000: introduction to sport and exercise studies; SES 1040: instructional techniques of training; and SES 1200: fitness and wellness coaching.
