President Bill Clinton Stresses Importance of Community Colleges at the Cuyahoga Community College Foundation Annual Presidential Scholarship Luncheon

President Bill Clinton, Founder of the Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States of America, lauded community colleges at the Tri-C Foundation’s 2013 Presidential Scholarship Luncheon on Thursday, October 17, 2013. The 21st Annual Luncheon, held at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel was another sell-out, with more than 1,200 people in attendance.

“This year’s Luncheon has raised a record $1.5 million with proceeds benefiting student scholarships! This Annual Luncheon is the Foundation’s opportunity to raise critically needed funds for student scholarships at Tri-C. We are truly grateful to all of our supporters—many of whom have been long-term donors—for making this possible”, said Catherine M. Kilbane, Chairperson, Cuyahoga Community College Foundation.

During his keynote address, President Clinton shared his commitment to global education and workforce development, noting that the community college model is a strong example of the shared decision making and creative cooperation needed to address society’s challenges:

“My belief is that community colleges work the way all of America should work. They're open to everybody, they're highly flexible, they change the curriculum based on the demand that the community articulates, and they tend to get very, very good results.”

Following his remarks, President Clinton and Tri-C President Alex Johnson, Ph.D. shared a question and answer session, addressing current topics of interest and world affairs. In recognition of President Clinton’s keynote address, Dr. Johnson announced that the Cuyahoga Community College Foundation has established the President Bill Clinton Scholarship Fund. “This fund will benefit Tri-C students who are the first in their family to attend College. It will be quite an honor for our students to receive such a scholarship,” noted Johnson.

Gloria Moosmann, Vice President Development and Cuyahoga Community College Foundation said of the event, “We are so very pleased that President Clinton joined us as our keynote speaker this year and shared his vision about the importance and impact of community colleges, especially Cuyahoga Community College.
He also understands the importance of scholarship support which is why he agreed to engage with us as our speaker. Proceeds are distributed to the numerous Foundation scholarship funds. Each scholarship awarded contributes to the quality of life for all by providing a stronger workforce for the region.”
