The Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra will present its 72nd concert season in 2009-2010 under the leadership of Music Director Victor H. Liva. The Cleveland Philharmonic continues its long association with Cuyahoga Community College with concerts at the Tri-C Western Campus Theater in Parma and at the Metropolitan Campus Auditorium in downtown Cleveland. The series also includes a performance at the Zion United Church of Christ in Tremont. Music Director Victor Liva will conduct all of the concerts in 2009-2010 with the exception of the Young Artist program in May, when guest conductor Guy Victor Bordo, Director of Orchestras at the University of Akron School of Music, will be on the podium.
The upcoming series features several accomplished soloists. Renowned native Clevelander, Spencer Myer, will open the season with Chopin’s First Piano Concerto. For the family concert in December, a “Night at the Opera” features soprano Sharon Shaffer, and baritone Ray Liddle performing well known opera arias and duets, with traditional music for the holiday season. In March, Philharmonic concertmaster Amy King will perform Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto. On April 11th Cleveland Orchestra musicians, violinist Isabel Trautwein and cellist Tanya Ell, will be the guest artists in Brahms’ Double Concerto for Violin and Cello.
Great symphonic works this season include Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, “Rhenish”, the Shostakovich Symphony No. 9, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, “Winter Dreams” and Romeo and Juliet – Overture Fantasy, Copland’s Billy the Kid Suite, and a relatively new orchestral work - Rainbow Body - by American composer Christopher Theofanidis.
In January 2010, the Philharmonic will participate in Tri-C’s annual celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The final concert of the season will feature the winner of the orchestra’s Frieda Schumacher Young Artist Competition.
The Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra is generously funded by the citizens of Cuyahoga County through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.
