Swine Flu (H1N1) Protecting Your Family, Schools and Community – November 2, 2009

Cuyahoga Community College’s Global Issues Resource Center and the Educational Service Center (ESC) of Cuyahoga County have partnered with University Hospitals of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County Board of Health to present “Swine Flu (H1N1) Protecting Your Family, Schools and Community" on November 2, 2009 from 5:30 - 8:00 pm. Learn from the experts about this flu virus and its possible impact on you and your family. Discover what your community and schools are doing to help protect you and your family in case of a pandemic.
This FREE event will be moderated by Monica Robins, Senior Health Correspondent at WKYC – Channel 3. In addition to a keynote presentation by Philip Toltzis, M.D. and panel discussion, a poster session showcasing community health resources, safety tips, and local programming will be held in the theater lobby from 5:30 – 6:00 pm. Professionals will be onsite to provide attendees with key health related information and tools.

Certificate in Conflict Management and Peace Studies
A certificate in Conflict Management & Peace Studies is being developed and may be available fall 2010. This will be the first of its kind at an Ohio community college. The intent of this certificate is to provide a background in the core theory of conflict management and peace studies, the skills of conflict management, and provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a community setting through service learning. Once approved, we will be pursuing articulation agreements with 4-year universities.

This activity based course is an introduction to the field of conflict analysis and resolution. Students will: Examine definitions and theories of conflict, diverse views of conflict resolution; Explore contemporary studies of individual behavior and social life as they relate to conflict and its role in violent and peaceful social change. Conflict Resolution Skills (Coming in Fall 2010)

Course Description (POL 2040 - 3 credit hours):
This skills-based course in conflict management and resolution is designed to increase awareness, develop skills, and gain knowledge of constructive conflict management processes and approaches. Explore causes of conflict, conflict styles, and interpersonal conflict communication skills such as assertiveness and active listening. Introduce constructive conflict management approaches will be introduced including negotiation, mediation, nonviolent action and Alternative Dispute Resolution approaches.
