Tri-C Alum Earns Military Honor for Daring Rescue
April 04, 2016
Justin Fugate, who earned an associate degree from Cuyahoga Community College in 2011, recently was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal after a daring rescue off the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
When a member of the U.S. Army fell into the Pacific Ocean tangled in his parachute cords, Fugate and a fellow Marine braved exceptionally choppy waters to bring the paratrooper to safety.
"I just did what any Marine would have done," Fugate told cleveland.com. "We thought fast, used our critical thinking skills, got a plan and made it happen . . . Actually I'm a terrible swimmer. That's the funny part. I guess the adrenaline takes over and you learn how to swim real fast."
Fugate, who grew un in Slavic Village, earned as Associate of Arts degree at Tri-C.
