Captioning & Court Reporting Program at Tri-C

Court reporting is the profession where individuals utilize a stenotype machine or voicewriting technology to capture all the spoken words in a legal proceeding or other event. These words can be presented on computer or television screens, displaying the instant voice-to-text translation or translated into text on documents such as trial transcripts.

What's Your Choice?
At Cuyahoga Community College you have choices.
  • Writing Methods: We offer two types of technologies. Machine students may learn to use a stenotype machine and specialized software to type (write) spoken words and have them transferred into text. Voice students learn to use a speech recognition engine and specialized software to listen and repeat (dictate) spoken words and have them transferred into text.
  • Educational Options: Students have an option to earn an Associate of Applied Business Degree. Students may elect to complete only those courses which meet NCRA guidelines.

  • Location Options: Steno students have the choice to learn entirely online, on the campus, or a combination of both. Voice students learn entirely online. Visit our distance learning page.
