ZHTH1147: ZHTH-1147: Coronal Polishing Certification Course for Certified Dental Assistants

Description: This course will prepare the Certified Dental Assistant to properly perform a coronal polishing procedure on patients. It is designed to meet the requirement for coronal polishing by CDAs as stated in the Ohio Dental Code. Participants must bring to class safety glasses, a uniform (scrubs) and a completed medical history form. The course consists of three hours of lecture and four hours of clinical experience plus a one hour written test. The candidate must pass the standardized test at 75% to receive certification.   • Summarize the principles of selective polishing.
  • Discuss basic dental and oral anatomy.
  • Describe and identify hard/soft deposits and stains that can be removed during coronal polishing procedures.
  • Discuss the effects of coronal polishing.
  • Explain the indications and contraindications for coronal polishing.
  • State the types of abrasives and factors affecting the rate of abrasion.
  • Determine appropriate polishing agent based on the patient's medical/dental history and clinical examination.
  • Select the appropriate materials and equipment used to perform a coronal polishing.
  • Demonstrate acceptable aseptic technique.
  • Appreciate the importance of ethical and legal considerations.
  • Demonstrate appropriate technique.
  • Explain the use of various auxiliary aids used during coronal polishing.

    Comments: A copy of current DANB or Ohio Certification and proof of immunity to Hepatitis B must be submitted with course registration.
